From the Black Forest in Germany comes this strapping, handsome bottle of gin brewed with 47 botanicals, and at 47% alcohol. It is tremendously complex, with so many different elements and flavors going on, yet it all comes together in one harmonious gin. Thank you, German Efficiency. I jokingly say that Monkey 47 can pair with just about any garnish, because it is so complex. I suggest going very simple, with just a lemon wedge, in a Monkey 47 Gin & Tonic, so that the beautiful fruit and floral notes of this gin don’t get covered up by heavier garnish flavors. My first bottle of Monkey 47 I picked up in the Copenhagen airport on the way to Oktoberfest in Munich. It was a great way to kick off a weekend of lederhosen and leberkäse: Monkey 47 on ice with the gents, a twist of lemon, and just clinking the glasses with the bottles of tonic in salute.
